Mania Changes with Age

There’s been endless debate about whether or not bipolar disorder can occur in children and most of that is centered around the form mania takes in the two age groups. Many say that mania should look just like it does in adulthood, disputing the research that made bipolar disorder more common in children with it’s claim that mania can look like irritability in childhood.

This week the debate continues with a news article from News Medical sharing a review of published studies that shows that there’s a difference between childhood mania and adulthood mania. The article claims that aggression and irritability were the most prominent symptom of mania in children where as in adults it was grandiosity and sexual interest.

So does this type of research sway your opinion either way?

  1. You know, as a child I had severe agitation and a very aggressive temperament. Now as an adult with Bipolar I get hyper sexed and feel on top of the world...often times I feel like I can predict the future. So I think the article is spot on when describing the differences between childhood and adulthood mania.

    1. Did you have any traditional "adult mania" as a child? Or was it mainly anger/irritability? I’m sure you’ve told us in the past, but for new readers maybe you can share. : )

  2. This just continues to confuse me. Our daughter has never ever experienced adult like mania. But she has been very irritable at times. Not agitated, but irritable. We probably will not know "what" she has until she is older. Cathy

    1. Sadly, I think that is the case for most of us. We just need to wait...
